How it works: four questions, once a week

Once a week, choose one real moment from work or from class: a meeting, a decision, a problem. Answer four questions in a few lines. Any day works. Write in English or in your own language. Each question gives you something you keep.

  1. Question 1What happened this week.Describe one real moment in a sentence or two: a meeting, a decision or a problem. This is the week you would otherwise forget.
  2. Question 2What assumption did I make that turned out wrong. What did you expect? What happened instead? Write the difference. This is where the lesson is.
  3. Question 3What general principle does this illustrate.Write the lesson as one sentence you can use again. This is what you will do differently next time.
  4. Question 4Where would this principle mislead me.Write one situation where your lesson would give the wrong answer. An AI can suggest exceptions, but only you can judge them against what you actually lived. This is what makes the lesson safe to use.

Before an important decision, you can also write three lines: what you expect to happen, what result would show you were wrong, and the date you will check. On that date, Noemate shows you your old note and asks what really happened. You see at once if you were right. Start with a small decision you can check in one or two weeks.

The four questions are the first of five short habits.

All five habits come from the Learner's Discerning Practice Model, and all five go into the same notebook. Each habit is small, and each one gives you something you can read again later.

  1. 1Stretch Inventory

See what you keep avoiding at work

    15 min a month

Once a month, two short lists: what new things you took on, and what you avoided.

  2. 2Friday SynthesisStart here

Know what this week taught you, before you forget it

    15 min a week

Four short answers about one real moment. In a busy week, one sentence.

  3. 3Decision Hypothesis

See where you were right, and where you were wrong

    1 min per decision

Before you decide: what you expect, what would show you were wrong, and a date to check.

  4. 4Operating Manual

Know the rules you really work by, and when they fail

    Once a term

Once a term: the lessons that came up twice, each with the situation where it is wrong.

  5. 5Capability Inventory

See what the degree changed in you

    Every 3 months

Two lists: what you can do now that you could not do before, and what you still cannot.

Then back to 1, with the next stretch
All five go intoOne notebookEvery note has a date and is written by you. Later, you can use these notes for your thesis and in job interviews.

You start with the weekly questions. Add the other habits when you are ready. The names are the ones used in the method's preprint. Here the Capability Inventory runs every three months; the preprint sets it once a year. The full model at drpnguyen.com/model.

Why you write it yourself, and not AI

You probably already use ChatGPT or Gemini for coursework. That is fine for getting the work done. But when AI writes the work, the finished work does not show which thinking was yours. Noemate is for your own thinking only.

Some apps let AI write, improve or summarize your reflections. Noemate does the opposite. No AI reads your notes. No AI writes your notes. You cannot paste text in.

The reason is simple. AI can write a good paragraph for you. But AI did not make your decision, and it does not know what you expected or what surprised you. If AI writes your note, the note does not show what you learned. Only your own words do.

In one 2025 study in the British Journal of Educational Technology, students who wrote with ChatGPT scored higher on their essays and showed no greater knowledge gain than students who wrote without it. The essay was better. The student was not.

What you get from this: at the end of the degree, you can point to months of notes and say, this thinking is mine.
